Respect the snow. Hit the trails!
Winter in Copper Harbor is not a detour, it’s a commitment that requires a bit of planning ahead. It's not for the faint of heart. It’s commitment to deep snow, real and sometimes unpredictable weather, and miles of winter terrain that demand your focus but your effort.
If you’re heading north this winter, here’s your trail-tested local guide to making the most of your time.
Getting Here: You’re Basically Entering Narnia
The last 30 miles up US-41 are a full immersive experience: giant pines, blowing snow, and the occasional “Is this road… narrowing?”.
But trust us, once you hit the Harbor, you’ll understand why we stay even during the winter months. Time slows down. Small noises become more noticeable. The stress of bustling through the day evaporates somewhere around Phoenix.
Local tip: AWD and winter tires are your friend. They do really make a difference if the weather turns unexpectedly, which happens frequently.
End of the Road Winter Trails
Two miles from Copper Harbor, the End of the Road Trails offer 16km of big-elevation terrain starting where US-41 ends. Expect long climbs, wide-open vistas, and remote skiing out toward Horseshoe Harbor or the top of East Bluff.
Wide enough for skate skiing and perfect for athletes who want serious winter mileage.
Heads up: This is a remote zone prepared with layers, water, snacks (no one likes bonking) and self-sufficiency.. Find the map for the “End of the Road Winter Trails” here.
What to Expect on our new trails!
Purpose-built XC skiing terrain
Scenery for days: Lake Superior views, hardwood corridors, conifer stands, and that iconic East Bluff openness, now available in winter mode.
Consistent grooming: Regular grooming windows keep the surface fast, predictable, and fun.
Backcountry Glades - Brand new glades on East Bluff, accessible via the XC ski network.
Huge shoutout to Casey Kruger, CHTC Board President, Aaron Rogers and the Rock Solid Team, Dan Wiersgalla, CHTC Board member working behind the scenes and the rest of the local Harbor crew for the hours they put into building and grooming these new lines.

Pack out every single thing you bring in

Weather: Expect the Unexpected (Then Expect More Snow)
We don’t get “a dusting.”, we get “shovel three times today.” We don’t say “cold.”,We say “just add a layer.”
Bring:
Real boots
Real mittens
Real snacks
A sense of humor
And maybe a second dry pair of everything
Lake Superior is in charge here. Always has been. Always will be.
Wildlife
Please enjoy all wildlife from a distance. Feeding or approaching animals changes their behavior and isn’t safe for them or for you. Admire, snap a photo, and let them stay exactly what they are: wild!
Why We Love Winter Here (And Why You Will Too)
Winter in Copper Harbor is the good stuff:
Empty trails that feel like your own private playground
Views that make your group chat jealous
Snow so deep your car occasionally vanishes
Community so small and welcoming you’ll wonder if you accidentally joined a club (well you could! Head to our membership page).
There’s a reason we stay for this season, and it’s not for convenience.
It’s for the feeling. The quiet. The connection. The winter miles that make you feel more alive than you have in months.

See You Out There
We’ll be out there grooming, riding, skiing, hiking, and doing our best to keep the trails fun, safe, and open for everyone.
If you love these trails, consider becoming a member, or drop a $5 day donation when you visit. Every dollar goes directly back into grooming, maintenance, and keeping this place running all winter long.
Winter is here. Grab your gear. See you on the snow!

Winter at the harbour brings crisp air, clear skies, and a calm rhythm. Cooler temperatures reduce crowds, making it a great time for peaceful walks along the waterfront and watching boats glide by. The light is softer, perfect for photos, while gentle winds keep the atmosphere fresh. Wearing warm layers and enjoying hot tea or local food makes the harbour experience slow, relaxing, and memorable.
